Current Goal
Chinese version: /zh-hant/goals/current-goal/
Keep one primary goal active. A clear goal makes LLM guidance specific rather than generic.
Goal statement
Outcome I want: Develop a usable understanding of how to improve cognitive supports (attention, working memory, and self-regulation) and understanding ability (explanation, prediction, application, transfer, and model revision), without confusing one with the other.
First concrete target
- Skill / topic: Analyse the quality of an explanation or claim; distinguish cognitive supports from understanding ability; and distinguish understanding from levels of mastery.
- Why it matters now: I want to learn actively rather than mistake a remembered rule, fluent explanation, or strong memory for real understanding.
- Observable performance by date: By the next review, independently analyse three unfamiliar everyday claims. For each claim, identify relevant conditions/variables, rewrite any overstrong statement, explain what evidence would demonstrate understanding, state whether a difficulty is primarily a cognitive-support issue, a knowledge/model issue, or both, and classify the evidence as recognition, explanation, guided application, independent proficiency, transfer, or teaching/creation.
- Deadline / review date: 2026-09-17
- Real-world context where I will use it: Evaluating my own learning in study, work, and life.
Starting evidence
- What I can already do:
- Distinguish recalling a formula from reasoning with it under fixed conditions.
- Use a simple causal relation (
a = F/m, when net force is fixed) to compare outcomes. - Identify that a claim may omit variables and conditions, rather than treating one factor as the entire cause.
- Recent example / attempt: In discussion, I explained that study time is only one of many factors influencing performance.
- What feels difficult or confusing: The exact boundary between being able to explain, predict, apply, and genuinely understand remains to be tested in unfamiliar cases.
- Constraints (time, energy, tools, language): Short, one-question-at-a-time guided practice; Cantonese may be used for the learner’s own reasoning, while technical terms can remain in English when useful.
Definition of done
I will consider this goal achieved when:
- I can distinguish memorisation, partial understanding, and robust understanding in unfamiliar examples.
- I can state the conditions and relevant variables behind a causal claim.
- I can rewrite an absolute or overgeneralised claim into a testable conditional statement.
- I can make a prediction in a changed scenario and explain the mechanism.
- I have completed at least one representative drill and recorded feedback.
- I have identified the next level of challenge or a maintenance/review plan.
Today’s next smallest action
- Complete the mastery-level classification drill without notes: for each case, distinguish understanding from mastery, state the highest supported level, and explain why a higher level is not yet justified.
