Performance condition
Without opening the distilled note, classify each case below. For each one, write:
- whether it demonstrates understanding, mastery, both, or neither;
- the highest level supported by the evidence (1–6); and
- one sentence explaining why the evidence does not justify a higher level.
Cases
- A learner can define opportunity cost accurately but cannot analyse a new purchase decision.
- A learner solves ten standard percentage problems correctly without notes, but has not worked on word problems with unfamiliar wording.
- A learner explains why a larger mass has less acceleration when net force is fixed, and correctly predicts what happens when the mass doubles.
- A learner fixes an unfamiliar spreadsheet formula error, explains the cause, and teaches a colleague how to avoid it.
Success criteria
- Does not treat recall alone as mastery.
- Distinguishes explanation/prediction from independent repeated performance.
- Uses “transfer” only when the case includes a genuinely changed or unfamiliar context.
- States an evidence-based reason for withholding a higher level.
- Uses the terms understanding, independent proficiency, and transfer consistently.
Common error to watch
- Assigning the highest possible level because a learner performed one impressive action, without checking whether the performance was repeated, independent, or transferable.
Next-step rule
- If all criteria are met: apply the same hierarchy to one real skill the learner is currently studying.
- If partly met: compare one pair of cases that differ only in whether the learner has a prompt or can transfer to a changed condition.
