  • Important boundary: These studies support particular interventions in particular populations and tasks. They do not prove that every learner will improve, nor do they replace measuring the learner’s own performance.

1. Retrieval practice and feedback

  • Design: Two controlled experiments. Experiment 1 involved 40 participants; Experiment 2 independently replicated the pattern with 25 participants. Participants learned word pairs by restudying or retrieval/testing, with performance-contingent feedback in some conditions.
  • Result: Final recall was better for tested than restudied material; performance feedback added a further later benefit.
  • What it supports: “Effective method” can be operationalised as retrieval practice followed by feedback, rather than passive rereading alone.
  • Limit: Laboratory word-pair retention, not a direct measure of the learner’s course grade.

2. Sleep condition interacts with study schedule

  • Design: Randomized parallel-group study of 56 adolescents aged 15–19. Participants had either 5 or 9 hours time in bed nightly for one week. Vocabulary was learned either in massed sessions or spaced across days, while total study time was held constant.
  • Result: Sleep restriction impaired recall more strongly for massed study; spaced learning protected recall relative to massed learning under sleep restriction.
  • What it supports: Equal study time can yield different retention depending on sleep opportunity and study schedule.
  • Limit: Vocabulary recall in adolescents; it does not establish a universal grade effect.

3. Planning and reflection around academic resources

  • Design: Students in two cohorts of an introductory statistics class were randomly assigned before exams to a strategic-resource-use intervention or a control condition.
  • Intervention: Students planned which resources they would use, why they would use them, and how.
  • Result: Treated students reported greater self-reflection and outperformed controls by an average of roughly one-third of a letter grade in the course.
  • What it supports: Planning and reflection can be studied as manipulable learning processes rather than vague advice.
  • Limit: The intervention was a defined package; it does not show that any kind of planning or reflection always works.

4. Goal setting, elaboration, and reflection

  • Design: Randomized controlled intervention with 85 undergraduates experiencing academic difficulty; compared an online written goal-setting program with a control task over four months.
  • Result: The goal-setting intervention group showed significantly improved academic performance relative to the control group.
  • What it supports: Planning plus elaboration/reflection can affect an academic outcome under a defined intervention.
  • Limit: This is not evidence that time alone causes improvement, and the study is specific to its participants and intervention.

How to use these papers correctly

  1. Treat them as external evidence that specific conditions can causally affect learning.
  2. Do not cite them as proof that the exact whole sentence is universally true.
  3. For personal verification, run a small within-subject comparison using comparable material, a fixed study-time budget, a predefined method, and delayed tests.
  4. Record the outcome measures separately: immediate retrieval score, 7-day delayed retrieval score, error type, and time required.
