Core idea

Understanding is stronger than recalling a statement or producing a fluent paraphrase. A useful working standard is whether a learner can use an explicit or implicit model to:

  1. Explain the relevant relationship or mechanism.
  2. Predict what should happen when stated conditions change.
  3. Apply or transfer the relation to a new case.
  4. Inspect and revise assumptions when a result conflicts with the model.

Practical distinction

PerformanceWhat it may showWhy it is insufficient by itself
Recites a formula or ruleRecallDoes not show the rule can guide a new judgment.
Gives a fluent explanationPossible conceptual languageMay merely paraphrase the rule without conditions or mechanism.
Predicts correctly oncePossible pattern recognition or a correct modelCould be a guess or a memorised example.
Explains, predicts under changed conditions, applies, and revisesStronger evidence of understandingTests whether a model is usable rather than merely verbal.

Conditional-claim check

When evaluating a causal statement, ask:

  1. What outcome is being explained?
  2. What variable is claimed to influence it?
  3. Which other variables or conditions matter?
  4. What is assumed fixed?
  5. What different outcome would occur if an important condition changed?

Example

Overstrong claim: “讀書時間越長,成績一定越好。”

A better claim must specify conditions such as learning method, attention, rest, prior knowledge, and alignment between practice and assessment. It should describe a tendency or a relationship under those conditions, rather than claim an unconditional certainty.

Evidence and next test

The learner has demonstrated the conditional reasoning pattern in a force/mass example and recognised omitted variables in everyday claims. Independent formulation and transfer remain to be tested in Practice Drill: Conditional causal claims.
