The distinction

Cognitive supports are processes that help a person handle information while thinking, such as:

  • Attention: staying with relevant information and resisting distraction.
  • Working memory: holding and manipulating a limited amount of information during a task.
  • Executive control / self-regulation: planning, monitoring progress, inhibiting an unhelpful response, and switching strategy when needed.

Understanding ability is shown by what a person can do with a concept or model:

  • explain the relation or mechanism;
  • predict a changed case;
  • apply or transfer it to a new case;
  • identify assumptions and revise the model after a conflict or counterexample.

Cognitive supports can make understanding easier to build and express. For example, complex reasoning often requires holding several conditions in mind. However, attention and working memory do not replace vocabulary, background knowledge, or a usable conceptual model.

A person may have good attention and memory but still only memorise definitions. Another person may have ordinary memory yet show stronger understanding of a particular topic by explaining causes and applying the model to a new example. From a short description, however, it is not valid to rank either person’s overall cognitive ability.

Diagnostic use

When performance is weak, do not assume one cause. Ask:

  1. Is the person missing knowledge, vocabulary, or a causal model?
  2. Is the task overloading attention or working memory?
  3. Is a strategy, planning, or monitoring failure blocking performance?
  4. What task would distinguish these explanations?

Practical implication

To improve understanding, train with explanation, prediction, varied application, error diagnosis, and model revision. To protect cognitive resources, reduce avoidable distraction, break complex tasks into reasoning-sized steps, externalise intermediate information, and use planning plus review. Strong instruction often combines both rather than treating them as separate fixes.
